The 1983 Federal Communication Act requires cable
companies to provide television channels for educational,
government information, and public access programming
in each community where they hold a cable television
franchise. In Plainfield, and in many other communities,
Channel 6 has been set aside by Comcast to air this very
local television content. Plainfield programming is only
available in Plainfield – other communities, like Joliet, may
also use channel 6 but that programming can only be
seen in that community. These local programming rules
apply to cable operators only – broadcasters using
satellite or other over-the-air methods of transmission do
not have to provide community access. If you use any of
these over-the-air broadcast services you can not receive
Plainfield community television programming.
We created P-SPAN so that programs created by the
Plainfield Television Group and other channel 6 offerings,
such as Village Board meetings, can be seen by a larger
